Welcome to Our Community

In Why Is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling? Lama Tsomo offers beginning students an introduction to Tibetan Buddhist practice. Yet the book is not meant to be experienced alone. At Namchak, our deep intention is to inspire people to come together in groups to discuss how practice might be benefiting their lives and how they can take lessons learned in meditation out into the world.

Below, you can find many ways to connect with the growing community
at Namchak
and find out more about this vibrant tradition.

Learning Circles:
Why Come Together?

There are three ideals at the heart of Buddhism: buddha, dharma, and sangha. Together, these concepts are known collectively as the three jewels. Buddha refers to the enlightened mind of the Buddha that is brought forth through meditation and practice. Dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha—the “map.” And sangha refers to a community of like-minded people who are pursuing this journey together.

While all three of the jewels are equally essential on the Buddhist path, the Namchak Foundation focuses equally on the jewel of the sangha, or community, and provides tools for people to relate to one another in a deep and harmonious way.

Visit the Namchak website for tools and tips to start (and lead!) your own group, find people in your geographical area, and download questions and reading excerpts for discussion.

  • This course is great -- it makes meditation so much more accessible to people my age. Today, for people living in a city or people who have kids or jobs or even just, well, lives, it’s a lot harder to find time to meditate. Having this course and integrating technology with meditation is such a great thing -- because now you can really do it anywhere. Having the guidance of a teacher on your phone, your iPad, or your computer makes it so that you can do it anywhere, at any time.

  • In the eCourse, Lama Tsomo takes concepts and explains them in a way that people can understand and check out for themselves. And what I really appreciate about Lama Tsomo and this course is that she says, ‘Try this out for yourself. Don't feel like you have to try it just because I say so. Just try this out and see what kinds of benefits it brings to your life.’ So I did. And yeah-- my life is better. (Brandon is an employee of Namchak LLC)

The Next Step: Deepening Your Practice with Retreat

Alongside upcoming book launch events for Why is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling?, Lama Tsomo will host two weekend retreats appropriate for beginner students in both New York City and San Francisco in April 2016 (dates TBD). At the retreats, students will receive introductory teachings from the book, participate in several led meditation practice sessions, spend time getting to know one another in small groups, and receive trainings in facilitation and leadership development.

Meanwhile, the Namchak Retreat Ranch is being developed for for immersion, meditation and practice on an expansive and beautiful piece of land in Montana. Currently scheduled to open in 2018, the ranch will host teachers and students coming together for learning, meditation, and practice.
